Jury recommends sentence for former JCPS teacher, coach convicted of rape, sodomy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A jury has recommended a sentence for a former Louisville teacher and coach convicted of rape and sodomy.

On Friday jurors recommended a 10-year sentence for Casey Kays, a former civics teacher and volleyball coach at the Academy at Shawnee.

On Thursday a jury convicted him of raping a 15-year-old student at the school. The victim told police the two had a sexual relationship. Court documents show Kays was the girl's teacher and coach.

Kays was arrested in September of 2013 when the girl accused him of sending her sexually explicit text messages.

He was indicted on more serious charges two months later.
