Meade County campaign signs defaced with racial slur

BRANDENBURG, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Meade Co. Sheriff says he is investigating a racial slur written on political campaign signs.

It happened on Highway 228 in Meade County. Someone vandalized several campaign signs, using spray paint to write a racial slur.

Rachelle Frazier says she discovered it Tuesday morning.

"I wasn't accustomed to what I found written on the signs," she said.

Frazier found the "n-word" spray painted on two of her campaign signs.

"I thought that it was very bad that we would resort to that," said Frazier.

Frazier is running for state representative, and is not African-American. However, Frazier says she is a new face in local politics.

"I think people are always afraid of the unfamiliar. I don't know other than that," she said.

J.J. Scarborough, a Meade Co. native who is running for jailer, also had the "n-word" written on his signs, as well as the letters "KKK."

He said this is not like the community that he knows.

"I've become pretty accustomed to my signs being stolen and vandalized, but this is the first time they've had racial remarks put on them. I'm very, very disappointed in whoever did this," he said.

Meade Co. Sheriff Butch Kerrick says he has opened an investigation and says an officer has spoken to a person of interest, whose car keys were found near the scene.

"My chief deputy felt confident that she was not, or her family was not, involved in the incident," said Kerrick.

As the investigation continues, Frazier and Scarborough say they'll keep running hard until Election Day.

"You know what, we keep moving forward. Because if it was a scare tactic, I'm not scared," said Frazier.

The sheriff says, so far, this is just a misdemeanor case. But if it's determined this is a hate crime, then federal charges could be filed.
