LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - One person was arrested after a heightened security event that occurred at Auburndale Elementary School on Tuesday morning.

A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, after police retrieved a knife and BB gun from the suspect.

Louisville Metro Police Public Information Officer Alicia Smiley said a 17-year-old male went to the school and requested to see school officials. The 17-year-old, who police have not identified, was reportedly a former student. After being refused entry into the school, the man left the building, according to officials.

Police were called to the school after staff members say the male approached the school at around 8 a.m., according to JCPS spokesperson Helene Kramer. Staff members reported that they thought the suspect had a weapon.

The suspect was taken into custody by police a short distance from the school at a home on Mackie Lane.

No students were present inside the school during the search. Buses and cars were diverted to a nearby area as police searched the school.

Police brought in a canine unit to search the school as a precautionary measure, however nothing dangerous was found.

The all-clear was given at around 9 a.m., after police completed their search. The suspect has been released into his mother's custody.
