LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Friends of Jeffersonville murder victim Tammy Jo Blanton want to spread awareness about domestic violence. They've organized a vigil and walk in Blanton's memory for Sunday.

"We feel that if we could bring the community together and we can help one person break the silence, then we can get a start on helping people out of domestic situations," said Blanton's friend Connie Sneed.

Blanton was found dead inside her Jeffersonville home in September. Police charged her ex boyfriend, 33-year-old Joseph Oberhansley, in connection to her murder. The women say they noticed one sign of trouble before it happened. Blanton had started backing away from friends.

"It was just too late I think for her and that's what we don't want for someone else," said friend Tonya Davalos.

The friends plan to release 46 balloons in honor of Blanton's 46 years of life at the event Sunday. The event is free and open to the public. They've also designed purple t-shirts that read "Break the Silence"and "Love Shouldn't Hurt."

"We're all survivors of domestic violence, so we're wanting them to understand, you can get out. You just have to know what steps to take and that's what we're hoping we can to do with this," said Blanton's friend Susan Fogarty.

The women say Sunday's vigil and walk is just the first step in a long term effort. They plan to donate money to a local battered women's shelter or to start a foundation in Blanton's memory.

"We're not gonna stop. This is going to be our life long goal and destination is to help people get out of domestic violence situations," Sneed said. "Sunday will not be the last day you see us."

The vigil will start at 7:00 p.m. on the Indiana side of the Big4Bridge.
