Fern Creek High School's ROTC program gets special recognition

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Fern Creek High School's ROTC program received special recognition Wednesday.

The school received the award for best junior ROTC program in the region.

This year the cadets at Fern Creek finished the year with more than 10,000 hours of community service: 40 percent of the cadets were on the honor roll, and the senior cadets received 47 scholarships.

The junior ROTC program is designed to prepare high school students for leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens.

"Our whole goal in ROTC is to make a better, more informed citizen," said Lt. Col. Roger Angel, a senior marine instructor. "So if they're out there and they understand the values of community service, and the value of hard work, the value of competition, they're going to be a better citizen all around."

Today was the eighth time the Fern Creek ROTC program has received this award.
