Multi-million dollar remodeling in the works at Louisville International Airport

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Millions of dollars in upgrades are about to land at Louisville International Airport.

"One of the major elements that will be accomplished first and undertaken first will be the branding and image enhancement. In other words, what is the statement when you come into the airport in terms of Louisville and how do we develop that sense of place?" explained Louisville Regional Airport Authority Executive Director Skip Miller.

Adding artwork, changing flooring and altering other fixtures in the building will be taken into consideration. The goal is to leave a lasting impression on travelers.

"It's kind of generic in here. I couldn't really tell is was Louisville," said traveler Zach Johnson.

Rebecca Richardson, of Brandenburg said "It's a nice airport. Some upgrades would be great."

Basic infrastructure and mechanical improvements are also on the table, according to Miller. He says there hasn't been a major remodeling in about 10 years.

"They're obsolete," Miller said about the terminal's central escalators. "The manufacturers have been out of business for many years and so they need to be replaced, and that will be one of the major elements, mechanical elements in the building."

Miller says construction will likely begin in the fall of next year. He hopes to hire a consultant for the project in January. The estimated price tag is $8 million coming from the airport authority's general fund.

"What were hoping for is it develops a further demand for air service by making it an even more pleasant facility that passengers will want to be a part of and find convenient and friendly, and want to travel out of our airport as the airport of choice instead of going somewhere else," Miller said.

Airport officials hope all of the work will be done before the Kentucky Derby in 2016.
