LANE | UK Tops Basketball Coaches Poll

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – For the second straight season, Kentucky is number one in the USA Today Men's Basketball Coaches Poll to start the season. The Wildcats from Lexington received 24 first-place votes compared to three for the Wildcats from Tucson, Arizona. Duke and Wisconsin also received first-place votes while Kansas rounded out the top five.

Louisville begins the season 9th according to the coaches.  Florida was the only other SEC team in the poll, while the ACC had the second-most of any conference with five.  The Big Ten led the way with six, with five of those in spots 18-25.

John Calipari didn't seem overly impressed with his Cats being considered the team to beat.

“We may have been ranked No. 1 when we lost in the first round of the NIT,” said Calipari. “We may not have been ranked number one when we won the national title. I can't remember. Looking back, I don't know where we've been ranked, but that's fine. I mean there are probably five, six, seven teams that all could have been No. 1 in the country. At the end of the day, you've got to play games and figure it out.

I imagine -- where were we ranked last year? Probably one or two, and we almost fell off

the face of the earth, so to me, that's fine. It's good. It's something for our kids to live up to, but really it has no bearing on what we're about to try to undertake.”

Here's the full rundown with last year's records, including those others receiving votes:
