Teens experience effects of distracted driving

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Getting behind the wheel is an exciting time in a teenager's life, but it can also be the most dangerous.

Orange cones, representing what could be another car or person, are hit as a result of a distracted driver.

“I hit at least three cones,” said teenager Ahmad Price.

Although the teen driver simulation may seem like fun and games, the real life consequences are no joke.

“The leading cause of death for teenagers is car accidents. So we're trying to teach them not to text and drive, not to drink and drive, and just to make sure they stay safe,” said Lisa Sams, a State Farm Agent.

As glass is broken on a window and the jaws of life are used to pry open the doors, a passenger is freed and placed on a stretcher. It's a grim reality to try and get young drivers to remember the 2n2 rule: Two eyes on the road, two hands on the wheel.

“If they experience this here, we're hoping that when they get behind the wheel, they'll think about what they've seen here and try to remember to stay 2n2,” said Sams.

For some teens it takes a firsthand experience to realize just how dangerous distracted driving can be.

“I like the drunk goggles because I think it will teach people not to drink and drive,” said Price.

Coupled with their lack of experience, it can be a dangerous situation, but the message is starting to sink in.

“If you're texting and driving and you ram into the back of somebody, that will be your fault,” said Price.

“That's like the same as drinking and driving too because you're not looking at the road, you're not paying attention. When you're not paying attention you can't see what's in front of you,” said teenager Tony Washington.

Washington has a message for his fellow drivers and basketball teammates from Fern Creek High School.

“Drunk driving is not good for us guys. Just don't drink and drive. That's just what I'm trying to say.”
