Former JCPS teacher sentenced for raping, sodomizing 15-year-old student

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former Louisville teacher and coach convicted of rape and sodomy has been sentenced.

The judge followed the jury's recommendation to sentence Casey Kays, a former civics teacher and volleyball coach at the Academy @ Shawnee to 10 years -- that includes five years for each charge, to run consecutively. He is not eligible for probation. He will be eligible for parole after meeting certain criteria.

"The fact that you lied about it so consistently and so aggressively for so long took the harm that you created and spread it out among a whole bunch of people who just deserve better," Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge McKay Chauvin.

On Oct. 9 Kays was convicted of raping a 15-year-old student at the school. The victim told police the two had a sexual relationship. Court documents show Kays was the girl's teacher and coach.

Kays was arrested in Sept. 2013 when the girl accused him of sending her sexually explicit text messages.

He was indicted on more serious charges two months later.
