JCPS educator named Teacher of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jefferson County teacher has been named Kentucky's "Teacher of the Year." Sarah Reed teaches third grade at Field Elementary School and Thursday morning she received the honor in Frankfort.

Reed says she was shocked and calls this a win for the city of Louisville.

She has been a teacher at Field Elementary for about five years, and a teacher within the district for 18 years. She's originally from Iowa City, Iowa.

She says she was shocked to hear her name announced as "Teacher of the Year."

"Everyone who saw my expression was like, is Sarah going to faint," Sarah Reed laughed.

This is the 2nd year in a row she's been nominated. There were 24 finalists in the running to earn this top honor.

She believes her hands-on way of teaching sets her apart from others and she's hoping she's also making a difference in her students lives.

"You know I kinda had a hard upbringing and I always translate that I know it's hard. This is what happened to me as a child, and this is how you can overcome it. Anyone can be anything. If you have wind beneath your wings you can rise up and achieve," Reed said.

She'll now begin filling out an application for national teacher of the year and says it means so much to represent the state of Kentucky, and city of Louisville, as the "Teacher of the Year."

"There's a lot of teachers that are out there and it's humbling to be nominated. It's humbling to win. It's really kind of surreal at this point," Reed said.
