Controversy swirls around new LMAS director after racy photos surface

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Just one day after the Mayor's office announced a new head for the troubled Louisville Metro Animal Services agency, there's a new controversy.

Racy photos of the agency's new director, Jessica Jo Montgomery, have surfaced on what appears to be a modeling web site. The mayor's office tells WDRB it was not aware of the photos, but adds they were taken more than a decade ago.

Now some council members have questions.

"If the mayor was not aware of that, then you wonder, who's doing the background checks?" said Kelly Downard, a Metro Council member. "Because apparently, you can do this by just Googling a name and what else do they not know about her abilities?"

We asked Mayor Greg Fischer about the photos Thursday night. "These are glamour shots that many kids have taken," Fischer said. "Great team at LMAS that's done a great job over the years so we look forward to them in the next phase going forward here."

City officials say Montgomery has 15 years of animal welfare and leadership experience. She served 10 years with the U.S. Army Veterinary Command. She was one of three new hires introduced Wednesday.

LMAS has had a troubled past with previous management, including one employee who was running an online escort service and another accused of sexual harassment.

Downard says the photos don't disqualify Montgomery for the job,but they raise questions.

"Who did the vetting? And if they did, did they perceive this as any kind of problem and if they didn't, that means this is the end of this and that's good," he said.

On Wednesday, the city's Chief of Community Building, Sadiqa Reynolds, told reporters she led the search in filling the leadership jobs at LMAS.
