McConnell responds to criticism from Grimes campaign at Rotary Club

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's a tight race for Kentucky's U.S. Senate seat, with both candidates touring the state and appealing for votes.

The Rotary Club of Louisville hosted incumbent U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell Thursday.

After speaking, McConnell took questions from those in the audience. He also answered reporters' questions, including one about a claim from the Grimes campaign that his camp has paid volunteers to fill events.

"The Grimes campaign claims you're having to bus in supporters to bulk up enthusiasm," a reporter said.

"We had some staff people staffing the event, sound system and that sort of thing," McConnell said. "Ninety-five percent of the people, if you were there -- were you there? Yeah, 95 percent of the people were local."

Recent polls show a tight race between McConnell and his Democratic opponent, Alison Lundergan Grimes, less than two weeks before the election.
