LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - One man was killed and another was injured after a man trying to get away from police crashed near Churchill Downs late Sunday.

Deputy Coroner Eddie Robinson has identified the man who died as 19-year-old De'Angelo Lopez Crawford Jr.

According to police, an officer saw the car without its headlights on Oleanda Avenue around 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 26 and tried to pull the driver over. That's when the white Acura took off on 7th Street Road.

The officer followed for about 20 seconds and then stopped. About a minute later, the officer came upon the crash scene at 7th and Wurtele.

Police say it looked like the car tried to drive through a lot and then crashed into a tree, went airborne and overturned. Crawford was pronounced dead at the scene; the passenger was taken to University Hospital and is expected to survive.

It's unclear how fast the car was going, but witnesses say the car traveled halfway up the tree before flipping.

"The traffic investigators didn't estimate a speed," said LMPD spokeswoman Carey Klain. "They just said it was a very high rate of speed. The car went from Oleanda to 7th Street, took off across the lot and went airborne."

There's no word yet on why the two men fled.

If you have any information on this case, you are asked to call 574-LMPD.
