LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) Montrezl Harrell scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, leading the white team over the red in an 89-86 victory in the second and final U of L Red-White scrimmage Sunday.
Still after the game, Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino wanted more from his star player.
“As a 3 (small forward), he should punish a smaller player inside,” said Pitino afterwards. “That's one thing; he's got to get it to where he's 75-25 inside so he doesn't take away that dominating presence inside.
Harrell is usually a power forward but on Sunday, he spent a good number of minutes operating outside. He finished just 1 of 7 from three point range.
Harrell was the least of Pitino's concerns, however. The two teams combined for 35 turnovers, something Pitino explained was due to his squad's inexperience. He's got 7 new players this year and he's still trying to figure out which ones can play now, and which ones cannot.
“We're nowhere near where we need to be. This is by far the weakest, physically; we have been in the last four years.”
Chris Jones led all scorers with 28 points but was just 8-26 in a losing effort for the white team.
U of L has time to get things in order before its first game of the season of the season on November 14th, but not much time.
They have two exhibition games coming up. The first is against Barry on November 1st.
“This team needs a lot of practice, a lot of work, a lot of skill development and fundamentals,” said Pitino. “This basketball team needs practice, practice, practice.”
