Texas prosecutor's office says it was unaware of accused serial killer's past before offering plea deal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An alleged Indiana serial killer could have been behind bars instead of on the street, but a Texas prosecutor's office didn't know his criminal history.

Darren Vann was offered a plea deal of five years in prison in 2009 as part of a sexual assault case in Texas. The prosecutor's office in that case says it knew nothing about a 2004 attack on an Indiana woman when it offered the lighter sentence.

The original charge could have meant up to 99 years in prison.

Police in Indiana say he has confessed to killing several women.
