Louisville Zoo's new baby hippo named Jahari

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Zoo's newest addition now has a name. The baby hippo has officially been named Jahari.

The baby pygmy hippo was born August 28.

Zoo guests were invited to name the hippo and the Zoo received more than 2,500 submissions.

Those were narrowed down to three, then the public was invited to vote on the choices -- which included Ace and Kimani.

Cheryl Cline of Jeffersonville, Indiana submitted Jahari's winning name.

She'll receive a behind-the-scenes tour with the baby hippo.

Jahari was born to the Zoo's adult hippo pair Hope and Maji. Pygmy Hippos range from Liberia, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Guinea in Africa. The species can weigh up to 600 pounds.

All of the proceeds of the naming contest will go to the care and feeding of Jahari and the other animals at the Zoo.
