LACETT | Kenny Johnson is shrinking but his reputation is growing

Louisville, KY (WDRB) - On the recruiting trail, U of L assistant coach Kenny Johnson knows he's got a little bit of a reputation

“When I walk into the gym,” said Johnson. “I want them to know I'm going to get that guy.”

And often, he does. In fact in 2013 when he was an assistant at Indiana, he was named one of the most feared assistant coaches in all of college basketball by ESPN

“It's not like I'm growling or angry,” he explained. “Honestly, it's paying attention to detail.”

But Johnson admits he did not show the same attention to his own health. When he was hired by the Cardinals last April, he weighed over 3 hundred 30 pounds.

That was a concern to his new boss Rick Pitino.

“I said listen, ‘you need to get in shape,'” said Pitino. “You are going to preach condition to these guys. Can you lose 1 hundred pounds?”

He said he could and he did. 105 pounds in about 6 months to be exact. His diet is simple.

“Eating the right foods, no binge diets.”

Now, he doesn't scare opposing coaches as often because quite frankly, they don't recognize him.

“The reaction of other people has been humbling but it's also been motivating,” said Johnson.

He's reputation's still there but the weight is not.
