LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Funding is now in place for the final extension of the Ring Road bypass around Elizabethtown.

Gov. Steve Beshear presented a check for $4.5 million on Wednesday. The money covers the cost of right-of-way lane acquisition and utility work for the project's final stage which will connect to I-65.

The Ring Road bypass has been built in stages since 1998 and started out as a two-lane road.

It has since been widened to five lanes which provide access to commercial and industrial business sites.

"At the community level it's the local streets, it's the local roads, it's the connectors, like Ring Road, that support the life and commerce.

The Ring Road bypass was first proposed in highway planning studies in the 1970s and 80s.
