West End School opens new athletic center

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After breaking ground two years ago, the state-of-the-art Darrell Griffith Athletic center is officially open.

"Imagine playing 37 away games a year, no home games, no crowd to cheer them on," said Darrell Griffith.

That is until now. The West End Eagles have a new 13,000 square foot facility costing more than $2 million.

"I'm really excited. This is a new opportunity for us," said 6th grader Daymeon Morris.

Before the athletic center was built, The boys had to practice outside on cracked pavement or in a basement with low ceilings.

"They never complained. They just said get me outta this cold," said Griffith.

"Downstairs in the gym we didn't even have space, we couldn't really shoot the ball as well as we can here," said Morris

Former NBA and University of Louisville basketball star Darrell Griffith attended West End when it was known as Virginia Avenue Elementary. He says he's happy to make a difference in the students' lives.

"The building itself shows the love the community has put into this place for them to succeed not only athletically, but also more importantly academically."

"Now it's a college preparation school so I'll be ready for college and get into a good high school," said 6th grader Ty High.

But the new facility is more than a gym, it also builds a sense of community.

"They will desire to be good husband and fathers in their own families, that's our goal," said West End School administrator Deborah Blair.

Sixth grade boys have their first home game Thursday night.

The West End School is a free, private, college preparatory school for young men who need a safe environment to meet high expectations.
