LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Louisville Metro Police has released the identities of the two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect Tuesday night.

According to LMPD public information officer Alicia Smiley, Officers Rondall Carpenter and Skylar Graudick are on administrative leave following the shooting on Grafton Hall Road.

Police Chief Steve Conrad said Tuesday night the two officers attempted to pull over a vehicle before it drove away. Subsequently, the vehicle stopped and one of five people in the car got out and ran.

“As he was fleeing he fired at least one shot at our officers, our officers returned fire,” Conrad explained.

The officers shot and killed the victim, who Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Rita Taylor has identified as 38-year-old William Chad Mattingly.

Mattingly was pronounced dead just before 8 p.m. Tuesday night at the scene on Grafton Hall Road.

Police say the officers initially tried to pull over the car when it appeared to be driving erratically.

Several neighbors heard and saw the shooting. Jeremy Helm was sitting on his motorcycle at the end of his driveway when it happened.

“Until I heard gunshots, I didn't even take it serious enough to get off the bike,” said Helm. “One of them came out of the car and was kind of jumping up and down like he had hit the lottery.”

Jacob Gipson lives across the street and heard the first gunshots and saw the last. He called 911.

“My wife actually hit the floor and I turned around and went to the door and saw someone running toward the back end of the neighbor's driveway,” said Gipson.

He says the incident has shaken his sense of security in this usually quiet neighborhood.

“You begin to worry a little bit more about your family,” he said.
