CRAWFORD | Louisville picked third in ACC preseason poll, Harrell runner-up in player of year voting

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WDRB) — In its first season of Atlantic Coast Conference basketball, the University of Louisville has been picked to finish third in balloting by the league's media.

Duke received 41 of the 65 first-place votes. Blue Devils' coach Mike Krzyzewski has a roster that features nine McDonald's All-Americans and returns guards Quinn Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon, along with starting forward Amile Jefferson from last year's team that finished 26-9 and tied for third place in the final ACC regular-season standings. Kahlil Okafor, a 6-11 freshman, leads the newcomers.

North Carolina picked up 12 first-place votes and was second in the voting, followed by U of L, which received three first place votes and Syracuse, which got two.

Tar Heel guard Marcus Paige was voted preseason player of the year. The junior averaged 17.5 points per game and led the ACC in field goal percentage at 91.1 last season, and was the pick of 33 media members who voted. U of L's Montrezl Harrell got 16 votes. Okafor was the runaway pick for rookie of the year with 62 votes in the 65 ballots cast.

U of L coach Rick Pitino said he agreed with Duke and North Carolina being the top two picks.

“I guarantee you they are No. 1 and 2,” Pitino said. “I don't know what I have with my team yet. We won't really know till we see them play. I have a strong starting five, but we don't know what we're going to get from some of these other guys yet.”
