Several businesses sue company that owns Westport Village shopping center

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several businesses at Westport Village are suing the company that owns the shopping center.  Wild Eggs, Ghyslain, Secret Garden, and Zi Olive are just some of the 22 businesses in the lawsuit who are suing Camelot Acquisition. The businesses claim they're being overcharged for taxes and operating expenses.

None of the business owners are commenting. But this lawsuit makes serious claims against the Chicago real estate investors who bought the center in 2013.

They claim operating expenses should not increase more than five percent. But the lawsuit says in 2013, there was an 18 percent increase from the prior year.

Camelot uses Inland Retail Management to manage Westport Village.

The plaintiffs argue "Although Operating Expenses significantly increased, the quality and quantity of Camelot/Inland's management of Westport Village significantly declined."

The lawsuit says, "Marketing and maintenance efforts were poor, which significantly decreased traffic in Westport Village." We could not reach Camelot Acquisition for comment.

An Inland American spokesperson released this statement, "Inland American Retail Management LLC is committed to the success of Westport Village, as we feel that the one-of-a-kind offerings of merchandise, dining and services that aren't found elsewhere in Louisville are a great asset to the community and visitors. As such, we continue to work with this select group of business owners and their counsel to resolve their concerns. However, we cannot comment on the specifics of pending litigation."

Joshua Rose, the attorney for the businesses, released the following statement:

"The retail business owners of Westport Village are committed to ensuring that the landlord properly manages the Center so that it can continue to be Louisville's premier shopping center. "
