UPDATE: PRP Fire has cleared scene at Liberty Tire Recycling, shelter in place lifted

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Twenty-four hours after it started, a fire is still burning at a tire recycling plant in Valley Station.

MetroSafe said Tuesday night that PRP fire had cleared the scene. The PRP Fire Department told WDRB News the tire fire is out. Contractors remain on scene in Valley Station for cleanup.

The fire at Liberty Tire Recycling started around 10 a.m. Monday, just before state inspectors arrived. The company hasn't been in compliance with state regulations since June.

Residents within a mile radius were told to shelter in place, but that order has been lifted. The EPA has dispatched air monitors to make sure residents are safe.

On Tuesday morning, crews were still smothering the fire with dirt. They started doing that late Monday night.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital last night with minor injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

"He'll be fine," Assistant PRP fire chief Dan Vanover said. "He had minor injuries. It was a fall, it wasn't burn related."

Investigators still do not know how the fire started.
