Motion for mistrial denied in case of murdered 48-year-old man in Clark County

CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Jurors see the police interrogation of two men on trial for a southern Indiana murder.

The drama started first thing Wednesday morning when the defense asked for and was denied a mistrial.

"There were no legal grounds for a mistrial which is the reason why the judge denied the motion," chief deputy prosecutor Jeremy Mull said.

Jared Sowders and Garreth Stephens are both on trial for the murder of 48-year old Steven Baldwin. Prosecutors say the two killed Baldwin in March of last year during a home invasion in Clark County.

Jurors spent most of the day listening to testimony from the lead detective in the case, who also played a graphic video of Sowders' interrogation.

On the witness stand, the detective even admits to misleading the suspect.

Family and friends say there's still no proof the two men committed the crime.

"It's one of the things I asked the detective about.," Mull said. "Those sort of statements."

"I see no evidence being presented on these boys and nothing makes sense," family friend Paula Marler said.

The prosecution expects to wrap up its case sometime Thursday morning or afternoon and that's when the defense will call its first witness.
