LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A Jeffersonville, Indiana man is charged with murder after he reportedly caused a deadly crash Saturday night in Louisville.

Christopher Wilton, 45, was arrested by LMPD officers, after police say he drove while intoxicated and caused a single vehicle crash, which killed a man traveling in the vehicle.

The coroner identified the victim as 45-year-old Christian Jenkins of New Albany. He was taken to University Hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained during the crash.

The crash happened on Newburg Road Saturday night around 11 p.m. near the campus of Bellarmine University, according to LMPD Public Information Officer Dwight Mitchell.

Officials say a 2008 Dodge Caravan was traveling north on Newburg Road, when Wilton lost control of the vehicle and left the road. The vehicle then hit a curb and traveled along a ditch line and came to rest in a field owned by Bellarmine University.

Police say Wilton admitted that he has smoked marijuana and drank a pitcher of beer prior to the crash. Police say that Wilton stated at the scene, "I killed my friend, I killed my friend. I've been drinking."
Police say a strong smell of marijuana was coming from the vehicle. Officials say they found marijuana and a pipe at the scene. Wilton also reportedly had slurred speech and red eyes.

When police tried to get a statement from Wilton, he reportedly said, "I don't know if I should without an attorney present. I think this might be really serious and I don't know if my friend is alive."

Police say Wilton failed sobriety field tests.

Wilton, who was not injured in the crash, was charged on Sunday. He is being held at Metro Corrections on a $100,000 cash bond.

He also faces charges of arson, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, which Mitchell says have not been related to Saturday's crash.

Wilton entered a not guilty plea in court on Monday.
