LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Dozens of veterans were honored this weekend in Jeffersontown.

The American Legion GI Joe Post 244 and the city held the ceremony Sunday at the Jeffersontown Community Center.

It's the 19th year for the event that honored veterans and active duty military for their service.

Those in attendance included veterans from World War II, Vietnam and Afghanistan.

These brave men and women will never forget where they've been, what they've seen or what they've done.

They hope others remember their sacrifice and not see Veterans Day as just another day off of work.

"I would hope they'd realize that there are people who are still living who have served the United States to protect their freedoms so that they'll have them the rest of their lives," said Bob Burckle, who served aboard the USS Basilone.

There are 800,000 veterans in Indiana and Kentucky.

It's been 60 years since President Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation in 1954.
