Louisville Metro prepares for winter storms

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and the Metro Government's snow team will meet today to go over the city's plan to battle snow and ice on the roads this winter.

Louisville Metro says it has 40,000 tons of salt ready to go.

The city used 41,000 tons in 22 winter storms last year.

Metro government crews apply brine and plow 2,700 miles of roads, but not most residential streets.

City leaders say the cost of salt has risen considerably.

"Last year we paid 56 and 20 odd cents per ton and this year we're paying just under 83 dollars per ton, so it's a big jump," said Metro Public Works Spokesman Harold Adams.

Training exercises using plows and other equipment were planned for Monday.

There are 265 employees with the Metro Government snow team.
