Whiskey sellers say Pappy Van Winkle craze good for business, Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's the king of bourbon and it has people in a frenzy.

"It's exciting for Kentucky. It's just wonderful, all the people out looking for it, everybody can't find it, that makes it even more exciting," said bourbon drinker Jay Harris.

People will do just about anything to get their hands on a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle. It was just last year when nearly 200 bottles disappeared from Buffalo Trace Distillery.

"We get phone call after phone call after phone call of people we don't know looking for it," said Gordon Jackson, owner of Old Town Liquors.

About 7,500 cases are shipped across the country, but most of the time Pappy Van Winkle doesn't even hit the shelves.

"The only thing we can really do is stash our inventory and hope that we get it to our good customers and really there's not enough inventory to even do that," said Jackson.

Jerry Rogers, owner of Party Mart, said, "It's our bonus, you're gonna sell every bottle you're gonna get."

The most coveted whiskey is the 23-year bottle, selling for hundreds in stores and thousands online.

Bradley Hammond, bar manager at RYE, said, "There's a huge market on the internet for it, you're gonna pay some ridiculous outrageous prices for it but if you want it that's how you're gonna get it."

Suppliers say there's simply not enough to go around. No one predicted the rise in popularity.

"It's wonderful bourbon, it truly is, and you couple that with there's only this much of it, everybody wants it," said Rogers.

It's all about supply and demand, people wanting what they can't have.

"Bourbon itself is really coming back, even some of the other brands are having a hard time keeping up with the demand for it," said Harris.
