CRAWFORD | Louisville says QB Gardner is out for the rest of the season

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — University of Louisville quarterback Will Gardner is out for the season with a left knee injury that will require surgery, the school announced Tuesday.

Gardner re-injured the knee while making a pass late in the first half against Boston College on Saturday.

He was 5-2 as a starter for the Cardinals, throwing for 1,669 yards and 12 touchdowns, with only three interceptions.

“It is really unfortunate and disappointing for Will because of how hard he has worked and how respected he is in the locker room,” Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said. “Will will continue to be an integral part of our program moving forward because of his leadership he has displayed and the respect he has in the locker room.“
A release from U of L said Gardner would require surgery “sometime in the next several weeks” but that a date had not yet been set.

Gardner's injury means freshman Reggie Bonnafon is back under center for the Cardinals. He played his best half of the season after coming on in relief of Gardner at Boston College.

He ran for 76 yards on 13 carries, and a touchdown. He also threw for 69 yards and two TDs, hitting on 4 of 5 passes. He looked more comfortable running the zone read than he has all season.

“I was really proud of his confidence,” Petrino told reporters after the game. ”He went in there and he was very confident. He knew what he was doing. He's done a great job in practice. We give him a few more reps than you normally give your backup quarterback, so to have him come out and play like that and throw that nice touchdown pass, run one there at the end when the game was on the line. I was proud of the way he played. And I remember (offensive coordinator Garrick McGee) telling him one time on the sideline that this is easier now: 'You've been in the games, you've got the experience, just go out there and play your game.'”

He'll need to ready now. The Cards travel to Notre Dame a week from Saturday, then finish the season at home against Kentucky.
