CRAWFORD | 24-hour countdown to No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 5 Kansas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The University of Kentucky and University of Kansas will stage a top-five showdown Tuesday night in the Champions Classic in Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

This is posting a little late, but let's wind the clock on a 24-hour countdown to tipoff in Indy. . . .

24 — UK's average for points off turnovers through two games so far this season.

23 — Kansas has won at least 23 games per season in each of the past 25 seasons.

22 — Words from UK coach John Calipari on taking freshman Trey Lyles to play in his hometown of Indianapolis: “If he plays well he will be the first player that we have taken home in my career that has played well.”

21 (and 1/2) — Number of offensive rebounds UK has averaged in its first two games, led by Dakari Johnson with 5.5 offensive boards per game. The Wildcats are averaging 24.5 second-chance points per game. Johnson leads the nation in rebounding at 12.5 per game, and is second in offensive rebound average.

20 — UK has won 20 of the last 22 games it has played as the No. 1-ranked team in the AP poll.

19 — Number of NBA Draft picks UK has produced during Calipari's five seasons. It's also the number of former Wildcats on NBA opening day rosters. Kansas has 17.

18.6 — Percentage of UK's points that come from the free-throw line. The Wildcats get the largest percentage of their scoring from layups and dunks — a whopping 48.7 percent.

17 — Words from Kansas coach Bill Self on Tuesday's game: “It'll be fun, a lot of history. … I don't think kids today think about that too much.”

16 — The average time of a UK possession this season: 16 seconds.

15 — Number of assists the Wildcats average per game, tied for seventh nationally.

14 — Number of points UK gave up in the second half against Buffalo after trailing by five at halftime.

13 — Scoring average for freshman Trey Lyles, the only UK player to reach double-figures in each of the Wildcats' first two games.

12 — Number of active coaches to reach 600 victories. UK's official game notes report that Calipari will earn his 600th career victory with his next win. On the court, that's true. The NCAA, however, only recognizes 557 of Calipari's victories, because of wins that were tossed out at Massachusetts and Memphis. He'll have to wait a bit longer until No. 600 is official in the NCAA record book.

11 — Number of assists Kansas dished out in its opener, a 69-59 win over UC Santa Barbara. Freshman guard Devonte' Graham
came off the bench and led KU with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Down 15-14, Graham scored eight points and dished out an assist in a KU 11-2 run. Junior forward Perry Ellis recorded his  seventh-career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Ellis was 4-for-7 from the field and tied his career high with three steals. Sophomore guard Frank Mason III
scored 12 points, while sophomore guard Wayne Selden, Jr. had 10. Freshman forward Cliff Alexander had nine points, four rebounds and a block coming off the bench.

10 — Number of UK players in Calipari's platoon system averaging at least 16 minutes per game. Willie Cauley-Stein leads the Wildcats averaging 24.5 minutes per game, followed by Aaron Harrison (22.5), Alex Poythress and Dakari Johnson (22.0) and Andrew Harrison (20.5).

9 — Number of McDonald's All-Americans on Kentucky's roster. Kansas has four, meaning 13 McDonald's All-Americans will meet in Tuesday night's game. If you ordered a No. 13 meal at McDonald's, you'd get get blank stares. They only offer 12.

8 — Number of national titles for UK. The Wildcats were the preseason No. 1 this season. The last time they were preseason No. 1, they won an NCAA title in 1995-96.

7 — UK's national rank in assist-to-turnover ratio. The Wildcats have 30 assists and 17 turnovers in their first two games.

6 — Number of victories Kansas has against UK — in 27 games.

5 (and 1/2) — The consensus line for the game at, after UK opened as a three-point favorite.

4 —
Kentucky's ranking for appearances at No. 1 in the AP poll, with 102, counting this week. Kansas is at No. 5 with 58 appearances at No. 1. UK is tops for appearances in the AP top five with 423. The Wildcats have spent 38.8 percent of their hoops history in the top 5 and 58.3 percent of their history in the Top 10.

3 — Number of times John Calipari and Bill Self have coached against each other. Two of those were in the NCAA championship game.

2 — Kansas' ranking in all-time college basketball victories, with 2,127. UK is No. 1 with 2,142.

1 — The University of Kentucky's national ranking heading into Tuesday night's Champions Classic game against Kansas. The Wildcats are 180-27 as the nation's top-ranked team.
