Popular downtown Louisville restaurant is closing after 30 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - After more than 30 years of feeding Louisville residents, a popular downtown lunch spot is closing its doors for good.

A line of customers is a common sight at Gavi's Restaurant in downtown Louisville. The business was started by Russian immigrants nearly 33 years ago, but the family business is calling it quits.

The eatery is situated in the middle of courthouses and city buildings, and has fed many of Louisville's biggest names.

"The mayor will come through here, judges come through here, attorneys who make more than we will ever understand come through here," said Gaba Gavi, one of the restaurant's co-owners. "But when they walk through this door, everybody is the same."

The Gavi family says they are ready to retire and pursue new business ventures.

"My mother and my grandmother are ready to retire," said Gavi. "My brother and I, we've got some projects we're working on together and individually and its time for us to develop those and see where they take us.

The owners are asking customers to share their photos and favorite dishes on their facebook page so they can compile all the memories into an album.

Gavi's will close at the end of December.
