Former girlfriend tells jury Dejuan Hammond was with her at mall when slaying occurred

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A key witness for the prosecution, who in the past has implicated Dejuan Hammond in the murder of Troya Sheckles, instead gave him an alibi on Friday and repeatedly said she couldn't recall her previous statements to police.

Princess Bolin, the girlfriend of Hammond on March 23, 2009, when he allegedly orchestrated the slaying of Sheckles, testified that the two were at the mall shopping for shoes that day.

Previously, both in her statements to police and the trial of co-defendant Steve Pettway, Bolin had reluctantly admitted that Hammond sent her into Shelby Park to look for a woman and report back to him shortly before Sheckles was killed. She has said she also overheard Hammond talking about the murder and sent her into the park after the shooting to see who was killed.

But she could remember none of that on Friday, repeatedly telling a prosecutor she couldn't "recall" telling police Hammond had anything to do with the murder. At times, Bolin yawned while testifying or told Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Elizabeth Jones Brown she didn't recall something before the prosecutor even finished asking the question. Bolin even denied knowing whether Hammond's nickname was “Shorty.”

Bolin was the last witness on the second day of testimony in Hammond's 4th murder trial.  In April, five days into Hammond's second trial, prosecutors turned over to the defense a summary of a 2009 interview with Bolin, in which she provided the mall alibi. She said Hammond was with her as she was shopping for shoes. The information, never before seen by the defense, caused a mistrial.

Bolin and her attorney have since accused prosecutors of improperly prosecuting her to force testimony against Hammond.

On Friday, Jones Brown first read Bolin's statements to police and then began playing a video of an interview with lead Detective Roy Stalvey. Only part of the video was played before the judge recessed for the week.

Prosecutors have said Hammond sent Pettway to kill Sheckles because she had agreed to testify against Lloyd Hammond, Dejuan's brother. Lloyd Hammond was facing murder charges in the June 2006 deaths of Terrell Cherry and William Sawyers, Sheckles' boyfriend.

Defense attorney Ted Shouse has said that witnesses, including Bolin, were bullied and coerced by police into telling them what they wanted to hear about Hammond.

Earlier on Friday, former Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Tom Coffey testified that Sheckles was "indispensable" as a witness against Lloyd Hammond and said she did not want to testify.

The case against Lloyd Hammond was dismissed once because Sheckles didn't appear to testify. When she was found, Sheckles was forced to come to court and swear that she would appear to testify against Lloyd Hammond.

In the back of the courtroom at the time, Coffey said, was Dejuan Hammond. When Sheckles left the court, Coffey said she was “trembling.”
