$150,000 grant for JCPS to help tackle concussion problem with new football helmets, more athletic trainers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- New helmets, more athletic trainers, and widespread baseline concussion testing are all included in a grant offered to Jefferson County Public Schools.

The goal of the project is "the protection and treatment of student athletes from concussions and other sports-related injuries," according to the application for funding.

"It's a very dangerous sport," said Keri Garcia, whose sons play football at Fairdale High School."It's really scary as a parent thinking that your kid could have permanent brain damage from something that they love."

Norton Healthcare is offering JCPS $150,000 over the next two years to help with the problem. Some of the funds would go toward buying 235 new helmets for athletes in the district.

Jay and Melissa Norton say a new helmet was key in helping their son, also a player at Fairdale, stay healthy.

"It cost us quite a bit for that helmet, it was around 300 dollars but after him having two concussions, it was well worth it," Jay Norton said.

The funding would also help JCPS add three full-time athletic trainers. They would be based at Fairdale, Shawnee, and Western High Schools.

More baseline concussion testing is also a priority. A JCPS Spokesperson says a few schools have done it already at their own expense, but the grant would provide testing for all high school and middle school football players, along with other students in contact sports.

"I think its wonderful," Garcia said about the grant. "I think it'll keep our kids a lot safer and it'll help us feel more secure as parents during the game."

The school board is expected to accept the grant during their meeting Monday night.
