LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two weeks ago Sunday, St. Xavier sophomore Patrick McSweeney was on the court at the KFC Yum! Center, playing for Bellarmine in an exhibition game against the University of Louisville.

But the excitement didn't stop when he left the gym.

This Sunday, he was back in Louisville, having completed another round of T-cell treatment in Philadelphia for the leukemia he has been fighting since he was five years old. He sat behind the Bellarmine Knights' bench in their home opener against Findlay, and was with the team before the game, and in the locker room for their halftime and postgame discussions with coach Scott Davenport.

His father, Mike McSweeney, said the family remains upbeat after Patrick's most recent round of treatments, and that he'll return to Philadelphia every two weeks for monitoring until doctors can tell how he's responding.

In the meantime, Patrick is staying busy. One night after playing in the KFC Yum! Center, he saw the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Carolina Panthers during Monday Night Football at Lincoln Financial Field.

He also got to see the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers this past Wednesday. He was given an all-arena pass, got to see behind the scenes, and after the game was invited to the Boston Celtics' locker room.

“I just really appreciate all the great things people have done for me and all of the good wishes I've gotten,” McSweeney said.

McSweeney returned to Louisville this past Friday.

“As soon as he got off the plane Friday night he went over to watch the St. X-Trinity (playoff) game,” Mike McSweeney said. “Then we got to go to South Bend (Saturday, for U of L-Notre Dame football) and now today. So it's been a non-stop two weeks for him.”

He was introduced to the crowd in Knights Hall before Bellarmine's home opener against Findlay and received a standing ovation.

And Monday, another big trip. He goes back to classes at St. X.

“That's important,” Mike McSweeney said. “We're trying to keep things as normal as possible.”
