LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have arrested a man suspected of setting a fire that killed one person and injured three others in Old Louisville this morning.

According to arson investigator Maj. Henry Ott, the suspect, 53-year-old Ronald Mills, lived on the first floor and admitted to starting the fire. He is charged with one count of first degree arson.

The fire on south Brook Street was first reported around 5:30 a.m. When crews arrived, they found heavy flames on both the first and second floors.

One man was rescued from a balcony in the rear of the building. Two other people inside the home escaped. All three were taken to University Hospital.

As firefighters tried to get to the upper level, they had to fight heavy flames blocking their path. When firefighters reached the second floor, they found the victim, an elderly man.

There's no word yet on the victim's identity.

Louisville Fire & Rescue Chief Greg Frederick says it was a challenge putting out flames in the attic because part of the roof had collapsed. Many areas of the home are heavily damaged.

The home had been converted into four rental units, and three of those suffered extensive damage in the fire.

Neighbors gathered outside the home after being awakened by the commotion.

"I heard the first truck coming and I looked out the door and there were balls of flames shooting out of the side of the house," said Jimmy Wilson. "It was horrific."

Wind gusts spread flames to a house next door, causing damage to its siding.

"The fire department got here in three minutes so I'm really thankful," said Eric Bunnell. "My house would have gone up if they had not gotten here as quickly."

Arson officials are investigating, but the cause of the fire remains unknown.
