LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Indiana State Police say an intruder was killed during a home invasion in Orange County.
Jacob Grimes, 23, of Paoli, Indiana, broke into a residence in the 7000 block of South County Road 700 East in Hardinsburg at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Detective Craig Starr.
Officials say that the home's owners, who are brothers, heard Grimes enter the home and moved their elderly mother into a bedroom as a safety precaution.
Police say the two brothers went and searched the home in an effort to locate an intruder. Their search initially turned up nothing. Police say the two men then went to retrieve tools to fix a door that had been damaged during the break-in. Investigators say it was when one of the brothers went into the home's basement, that he encountered Grimes.
Officials say Grimes punched the victim and the two men became involved in a physical altercation.
The other brother heard the fight from another room. Police say he went into the room and saw that Grimes was armed with a knife and fighting with his brother. Police say the man then shot Grimes with a handgun; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy was performed on Grimes' body on Tuesday morning.
