LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Donald Lassere, CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center, has been elected chairman of the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau Commission after the death of previous chairman Michael Howerton earlier this month.

Jim O'Malley, director corporate affairs at Louisville-based Brown-Forman Corp., will succeed Lassere as vice chairman of the board.

The commission is the policy-making body of the Convention & Visitors Bureau, which has annual budget of about $16 million funded mainly through hotel taxes. The bureau recruits conventions to the city and promotes tourism.

Gov. Steve Beshear will appoint someone to fill the vacancy created by the death of Howerton, who was general manager of the Louisville Marriott Downtown.

Convention & Visitors Bureau spokeswoman Stacey Yates said there is no timetable for Beshear's appointment.

Convention & Visitors Bureau President and CEO Karen Williams praised Lassere and O'Malley.

“Donald Lassere brings a strong background of leadership to our organization. His insight from leading one of our signature attractions will be an asset as we continue to market Louisville as a world-class destination," Williams said in a news release. "Jim O'Malley offers a perspective from one of our state's treasured and iconic industries. Both men will lend their expertise to support the economic development goals of Louisville tourism in a vibrant time of growth.”
