Tibetan monks bring ancient traditions to Thanksgiving in the highlands

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Tibetan monks mixed Thanksgiving with a prayer for world peace this year.

They crafted what's called a mandala inside the Heine Brothers coffee shop in the Douglass Loop.

The monks carefully place millions of grains of colored sand in a complex pattern.

During a closing ceremony Saturday afternoon, they will sweep all the sand into one, colorful pile and scatter it in Beargrass Creek.

It's an ancient tradition that symbolizes the impermanence of all things in the world.

The monks are spending five days on their project, which also raises money for their monastery.
