Louisville Cardinals win Governor's Cup fourth year in a row

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Whether you bleed blue or you bleed red, the battle of the bluegrass was a nail biter.

With tailgating beginning at 8 a.m., the day started off on a positive note for both University of Kentucky fans and University of Louisville fans.

But only one team could finish on top in the Governor's Cup rivalry.

“I knew we was gonna win anyway, but I'm glad it was a good game,” said U of L fan Terrance Woods.

And a good game it was. With no steady lead, the Cats and Cards battled it out until the very end.

“At first we weren't playing very well and then we started playing really well, so I'm excited that we won,” said one of the Cards' youngest fans, Bryna Cecil.

“I was really expecting that we would win by a lot more, but a win is a win so I'm not complaining at all,” said Ryan Cecil.

The littlest of details even played a major part in the outcome.

“Well we had a chance to catch that last interception. Could have sealed the game, and normally when something like that happens and you mess up on that play, you normal loose and that's what happened,” said UK fan Mark Woods.

The Cats and Cards rivalry has collided for 21 consecutive seasons, but Saturday's game was a first. This is the first time Kentucky and Louisville have met in a regular season finale. In years past, they've met at the start of the season.

“Personally I think the outcome would have been different with the game at the beginning of the season, but a win is a win and they earned it, doesn't' matter when you play them, they won,” said UK fan Austin Miller.

A fact UK fans say the team should remember.

“First game of the season you don't know what to expect. Both teams knew what to expect today,” said Auston Henson.

Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, was a sea of red sprinkled with Wildcat fans. While clearly outnumbered, UK fans remain resilient.

“It was a good game all in all though, I can't complain. We played a good game,” said Woods.

They are even looking forward to a different match-up.

“It's okay we'll get 'em in basketball.”

But until then, Louisville fans are living in the moment.

“It's a good finish to the season so I can't complain,” said Kristi Kaiser.

This is U of L's fourth consecutive win over U-K.
