U of L men's soccer season comes to end after NCAA Tournament loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - The University of Louisville men's soccer team fell 1-0 to University of Maryland, Baltimore County Sunday night, knocking them out of the NCAA Tournament.

The unseeded Retrievers continued their upset run, knocking off the 13th seeded Cardinals just a week after taking out fourth seed, and 2013 runner-up, Maryland.

The game's only goal came on a penalty kick in the 24th minute when UMBC midfielder Mamadou Kansaye was brought down in the box. Cardinals goalkeeper Joachim Ball guessed correctly, but wasn't able to make the save.

Despite managing four shots on goal and 13 total shots, the Cardinals were never able to equalize.

The Cardinals' solid possession-based play won them a handful of late chances, including a pair of shots that were put wide by Will Vitalis and Ricardo Velazco in the 72nd and 74th minute, respectively.

Another opportunity came in the 82nd minute when right back Tim Kubel put a shot wide off a through ball.

A spectacular save from Retrievers goalkeeper Billy Heavner kept out what should have been the tying goal off a headed shot from Louisville's Andrew Brody in the 80th minute.

The Cardinals dominated possession with 13 total shots to UMBC's eight, but missed opportunities and a brilliant save kept the Cardinals scoreless and sent the Retrievers on to the quarterfinals to face 12th seeded Creighton.

Louisville finishes the season 13-9-3.
