LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Online shopping is expected to hit record highs this holiday season, which means carriers are having to step up their game in order to keep shipments on time.

Online spending is expected to reach $89 billion this holiday season, according to Forrester Research. That's a 13 percent increase over last year.

"We've seen that trend rise, and it will continue to rise," said UPS spokesperson Jeff Wafford of online shopping. "Everyone is always shopping. They have the capability to shop from their phones. They can shop and ship anywhere at anytime."

Through the month of December, UPS expects to ship 585 million packages. That's an 11 percent increase from last year, when carriers were burdened by millions of packages and bad weather, resulting in shipping delays.

"We've done a lot to prepare, and we know the volume is coming," said Wafford. "We have five meteorologists on staff as well, so they're watching the weather."

Wafford said starting December 26, 2013, officials started planning for the 2014 holiday shipping season. As a result, they have added 900 seasonal employees at Worldport alone, and between 10,000 and 15,000 worldwide.

Worldport has also added a large parking lot that allows parking for 900 tractor-trailers. This addition was a direct result of the large number of e-commerce distribution centers based in Louisville, and the increase in online shopping.

UPS expects its busiest day to be December 22. They expect the number of packages to exceed last year's peak day by several million. In addition, they expect to have six days exceed 31 million packages.

Worldport is still hiring seasonal workers. For more information about UPS jobs, click here.
