LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Police have arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with the death of 16-year-old Shavonna Ross.

Ross was shot Saturday night behind a home near south 24th Street and Elliot Avenue.

Authorities held a press conference Wednesday morning, where they said they are still looking into what led up to the shooting, but they are calling this a tragic situation.

"I don't think there's a word in human lexicon that could really express the tragedy that's happened here," said LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

Ross was an 11th grade student at Fairdale High School. She was found behind a boarded up home in the Russell neighborhood. We're told it's an area where dozens of teens often gather.

Police have been looking into what led up to the shooting.

"You know, we're hearing several different accounts of what happened, maybe an event the night before -- I believe Light up Louisville -- there was some kind of skirmish between some individuals there," said Mitchell. "I don't know if she was directly involved in that at that point, but those are the things that we're hearing and looking at."

Police did confirm that the suspect is accused of shooting into a crowd, killing Ross and wounding another teenager, who is expected to be OK.

Earlier in the week, the family of Shavon Ross, spoke about the young girl, who they say was looking forward to living the life ahead of her.

"My daughter should not have ever lost her life," said Ross's mother, Pat Ladd.

Family members believed early on that another teen was responsible for her murder, and Ladd made this plea: "He just needs to turn himself in. That's all we want, to turn himself in. It's not right for him to be running around shooting people."

The suspect came forward Tuesday night, and is now charged with murder and attempted murder.

Police aren't yet saying how he knew the two victims but do say, early on, he was a person of interest in the shooting.

Police say teen violence is something everyone should think about.

"The bottom line in this thing, this is a very tragic situation, whatever the situation was, where we've lost a young life again in this community," said Mitchell.

Police are not releasing the suspect's name because he hasn't yet been charged as an adult.

Ross's funeral will be held Saturday at the Cable Baptist Church located at 314 S. Wenzel Street. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by funeral services at 1 p.m.
