LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - An Elizabethtown woman sits behind bars, charged with cutting her Golden Retriever with a razor blade on several occasions so that she could use his medication.

The Elizabethtown Police Department says it responded to a call about a suspicious dog injury at the Elizabethtown Animal Hospital on Thursday.

A vet told officials, Heather Pereira, 23, had brought her 4-year-old Golden Retriever to the hospital for treatment for a cut that matched similar injuries he was treated for in October.

At that time on Oct. 17, she asked for Tramadol for her injury.

Three days later, she returned to the hospital and said her child had accidentally flushed the medication down the toilet, and she needed more.

The hospital gave her 10 tablets.

Pereira returned again Thursday with her injured dog asking for medication.

In an interview with police, Pereira admitted to police to cutting the dog every time.

She also says she took only three or four pills and gave the dog the rest.

Pereira is charged with torture of a cat or dog and attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud.
