LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The good news continues to percolate for the Western Kentucky football team.

Three days after the Hilltoppers (7-5) earned a Christmas Eve trip to Nassau for the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, Chad Bishop of the Bowling Green Daily News reported that the NCAA has granted a medical hardship wavier to quarterback Brandon Doughty so he can return to WKU for a sixth season in 2015.

The NCAA restored the season Doughty lost when he was injured after playing in two games in 2011. He played in only three plays in his second game of his redshirt freshman season.

“We are very happy for Brandon, who persevered through two seasons of injuries, that now he will be able to play another season,” WKU athletic director Todd Stewart said while confirming the news.

“And, we'd like to thank the NCAA for reviewing all the facts and rendering a fair ruling that certainly was in the student-athlete's best interests.”

Doughty, a redshirt senior, ranked second in the nation in passing yards per game, averaging 362. He led the nation with 4,344 passing yards and 44 touchdowns. Doughty completed 344 of 510 throws with only 10 interceptions.

Doughty led Western to victories over Bowling Green, Navy and Marshall, which was 11-0 when the Hilltoppers defeated the Thundering Herd, 67-66, on the day after Thanksgiving.

Western will play Central Michigan in its bowl game, which will be televised by ESPN at noon on Christmas Eve.

Next season Western's schedule features games at Vanderbilt, Indiana and Louisiana State.

Doughty is 6'3 and 210 pounds. He redshirted in 2010 after playing high school football at North Broward Prep in Davie, Fla.
