Federal Highway Safety Administration orders testing on possibly unsafe guardrails

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Federal Highway Administration is putting guardrails that may be unsafe to the test.

The administration ordered testing on the Trinity guardrail system, which is in more than a dozen states including Kentucky.

Guardrail is supposed to collapse when hit by a vehicle, but photos from crashes show the guardrail has pierced through cars, impaled drivers and caused severe injuries and deaths.

Kentucky transportation officials have banned contractors from installing any more Trinity guardrails.

Testing is happening now in San Antonio, Texas. If the guardrails are determined to be unsafe they'll be replaced.
