LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One man died at just before four a.m. Friday morning on Dixie Highway and police say he was involved in a road rage incident leading up the wreck.

It happened around 3:45 Friday morning near Elzie Road in front of Target.

Police say 44-year-old Joseph Harper got into an argument with another driver after their vehicles collided. Harper allegedly bumped into the back of the other driver's vehicle.

Both men got out of their vehicles and got into a "physical confrontation," according to police. The men then got back into their cars and began driving southbound on Dixie Highway.

Police say Harper again bumped the other car in the rear passenger side, before the unnamed driver pulled into the parking lot of a nearby shopping center.

Police say witnesses told them Harper then stopped in the southbound lane and began driving the car in reverse at a such a high rate of speed that it became airborne and hit the curb, a tree, a traffic light control box and knocked down a light pole.

Deputy Coroner Bob Jones says Harper was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no injuries to the driver of the second vehicle. Police say they are awaiting the results of toxicology reports.

Police closed Dixie Highway in both directions from Elzie to Johnsontown Road for about four hours.
