LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a woman who was found dead on Phyllis Avenue, near Churchill Downs, according to LMPD Public Information Officer Alicia Smiley.

LMPD's Homicide Unit has charged Deshon Dorsey, 26, with murder in connection with the death of the victim, who has been identified as 24-year-old Porcia Mills. Dorsey was taken into police custody on Saturday night at 11:55 p.m., according to Officer Smiley. Police say Dorsey was Mills' boyfriend and the couple had been living together.

Police discovered Mills inside her apartment on Phyllis Avenue, after receiving a request from friends for a welfare check around 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

"Apparently family members had not heard from the female in quite some time and were concerned about her," Smiley said, as she addressed the media on Friday night.

Her 2-year-old son was also found inside the apartment unharmed.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office said Mills was stabbed multiple times. Police said they weren't sure how long she had been dead, or how long the child was left alone in the home.

Neighbors who lived in the same building as Mills said they didn't hear commotion or cries for help. They didn't want to go on camera, but told WDRB that Mills was rarely seen without her son, and that she was a "great mom."

Dorsey is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Monday.
