USPS offers Sunday holiday hours around Kentuckiana

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The United States Postal Service is gearing up for its busiest day of the year on Monday.

More than 640,000,000 cards, letters and packages are expected to be processed.

"It's kind of weird, but it was kind of nice during the holiday season," said Mallory Hall of Louisville, talking about extended holiday hours at the Saint Matthews location.

Her husband Michael serves in the Army and got deployed back in July. It's his first Christmas away from his family.

"He's in Kuwait right now," Hall said. “And I just sent him, you know, some T-shirts and sweatpants and a little stuff for Christmas and a card and everything."

"I expected at least 20 or 30 people in line," said Kenny Wooton, who is shipping part of Kentucky down to Florida.

"I'm sending Churchill Downs racing horseshoes to some colleagues and employees in Fort Lauderdale," Wooton said.

Wooton and Hall just two of dozens who are taking advantage of extended holiday hours.

“Anything that comes in today goes out today," said Jill Vuick with the USPS.

"Last year, Saint Matthews was only open one day and it was so successful we decided to extend that," Vuick said. "So we decided to use the Okolona post office and it's been very convenient for our customers."

Barb Rogers lives in Bullitt County and just happened to find out that the post office was open on Sunday.

"Actually I was looking for a place to get a haircut and I saw the sign that said ‘post office is open 1-4 Sunday', and I thought great," Rogers said.

She's starting her annual magazine shipment sending them once a month to friends and family.

"It's great because when you work full-time, usually by the time you get off the post office is closed or you don't have time to go do it all," Rogers said.

The post offices will be open again next Sunday as well from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at locations in Saint Matthews, Okolona and Clarksville.
