Charitable organizations plead for donations as holidays approach

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Charitable organizations are asking people to dig a little deeper to help those in need before the holiday season ends.

Officials with The Salvation Army say they are about halfway to reaching $400,000 from the Red Kettle Campaign.

"We have 10 days left and we were at about $234,000 on Saturday," said Major Art Penhale.

Penhale says donations from its biggest fundraiser benefit The Salvation Army the entire year. He says they depend on collections at the 50 kettle locations around Louisville. The organization hasn't accepted credit cards at those locations in several years.

"I don't think people were as comfortable back then," said Penhale. "I think it's something as we move forward, as we move that way, we'll look at it again."

Penhale says the Salvation Army may have to look at cutting other services if the goal isn't met.

"I want to say it makes me a little nervous, but you know I also realize we're living in one of the most compassionate, giving communities in our country," Penhale said.

That's how Jeanine Triplett with The Center for Women and Families feels. The organization is seeking more donations for the annual Holiday Gift Card Drive.

"Our goal is $30,000 and as of this morning we've raised $15,000," said Triplett.

She says the $25 gift cards will be given to 700 people, including children. The campaign ends this Friday.

"This past week has been really encouraging," she said. "We know Louisville has an amazing community and a lot of people give each year so we just always have faith that the community will step up and provide the gift cards, and they always do."
