LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man has received a sentence of 40 years in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the Dept. of Justice.

Troy Lemont Gaines, 23, was convicted for the armed robbery of eleven area convenient stores and fast food restaurants in December 2012 and January 2013.

The charges came about as part of “Project Recoil,” which is an initiative that seeks to prosecute violent criminals in Louisville.

Gaines' co-defendant Shaundrell Robinson, 34, also of Louisville, was charged in a 22-count federal indictment on April 2, 2013.

Officials say both Gaines and Robinson have prior felony convictions and were charged with eleven armed robberies that happened between December 5, 2012 and January 3, 2013 in Metro Louisville and Radcliff.

During one of the robberies, officials say a shot was fired by Gaines while he struggled with a victim.

LMPD arrested Gaines on January 5, 2013, after he reportedly robbed a Speedway gas station located at 8325 Preston Highway.

Robinson was previously sentenced on Nov. 11 to 18 years in prison, which will be followed by a three year period of supervised release.

“We have concluded the prosecution of this terrible frenzy of armed robberies, and the collaboration of our state and local partners has been instrumental in getting this done,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Kuhn. “ ‘Project Recoil' is proving to be a highly effective tool in dealing with violent crime in our community. Lengthy sentences for violent repeat offenders are one important part of a comprehensive approach to building a safer community, and we value the support of our state and local partners for this program.”

Presented evidence, according to official court documents, included: video surveillance of the armed robberies as they occurred, a police dash-cam video showing Gaines' arrest while he was wearing a ski mask, a Lorcin semi-automatic pistol, magazine, five rounds of ammunition and two shell casings that were located on the sidewalk outside the China Express restaurant that was robbed on Dec. 19, 2012.

Audio of Gaines' statement to LMPD, video still photos signed by Gaines, a black ski mask and a loaded 9 mm pistol confiscated from Gaines

during his arrest were also presented as evidence.

Gaines pleaded guilty to 11 counts of robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence in July.
